Sidney Prescott is the main protagonist of the Scream Franchise.
Biography[]
Sidney is put to the test against a number of Ghostface offenders and their allies across the single timeline of the series. She develops from a victim to a local famous survivor and grows up from a traumatized young girl to a tough adult and mother.
Scream (1996)[]
Casey Becker, a high school student, is home alone when she gets a call from an ominous individual, and they talk about horror movies. Indulging in sadistic behavior, the caller threatens Casey's life and won't let her be alone. In order to keep her boyfriend Steve alive, he confesses that he is restrained and gagging outside on her patio and makes her provide answers to questions concerning horror movies. Steve is killed in front of Casey when she gives a wrong response to a Friday the 13th question. Casey tries to run away after refusing to answer any more questions, but she is stopped by a person dressed as "Ghostface," who kills her before her parents get home and discover her dismembered body hanging from a tree.
Following the murders, news organizations swarm the town, and the police launch an inquiry. Sidney Prescott, a teenager, battles with the first anniversary of her mother Maureen's rape and murder while Gale Weathers, a news reporter Sidney despises, enters the media. Gale was in charge of disseminating tales and conspiracies about Maureen's passing, implying that the jailed Cotton Weary, who was tried and found guilty of raping and killing Maureen, was not the one who committed the crime. That evening, Sidney receives a mocking phone call and is attacked by Ghostface while she waits at home for her closest friend Tatum Riley to come. Billy Loomis, Sidney's boyfriend, shows up right after. When he loses his phone, Sidney assumes he made the call and runs away. Billy is detained and interrogated, but after that, Sidney gets another unsettling call from Tatum's home.
The following day, Billy is freed, and because the ominous phone calls had been linked to Neil Prescott, Sidney's father, suspicion now falls on him. After the killings cause the suspension of classes, Ghostface ambushes and stabs Principal Arthur Himbry to death. Billy's best friend and Tatum's boyfriend, Stu Macher, organizes a party to mark the end of the school. Gale shows up uninvited because she believes the murderer will attack again. Dewey Riley, a deputy sheriff who is Tatum's older brother, keeps an eye out for the murderer at the gathering. Ghostface corners Tatum as she enters the garage and smashes her neck with the garage door when she tries to flee via the pet door. After learning of Himbry's passing, many partygoers leave, leaving only Sidney, Billy, their buddy Randy Meeks, Stu, and cameraman Kenny for Gale.
After engaging in sexual activity, Ghostface confronts Sidney and Billy, who he then stabs. After escaping the house, Sidney asks Kenny for assistance, but Kenny is killed by Ghostface. Dewey gets stabbed in the back while doing an investigation in the house, and Gale smashes her van while trying to flee. Sidney takes his revolver for protection. When Randy and Stu arrive, they each accuse the other of being the murderer, but Sidney runs back inside the home and discovers Billy wounded. Sidney hands Billy the revolver after they let Randy inside, and Billy shoots Randy, exposing himself as the murderer. By speaking into a voice changer, Stu is exposed to be the killer's accomplice.
Sidney is cornered in the kitchen as Billy and Stu intend to murder her and then blame her father, who they have kidnapped, for the murderous rampage. They also admit that Cotton was set up for the murder of Cotton's mother because she had an affair with Billy's father and drove Billy's mother away. As a result of Gale's intervention, Sidney is able to flee and turn the tables on the murderers. She calls them out and dons the Ghostface mask before knocking Billy out and killing Stu by dropping a television on his head. Billy wakes up furious and rushes at Sidney, but Gale shoots him. Randy, who is hurt but still alive, observes that the murderer always reappears for one final scare. Sidney shoots Billy in the head, killing him in the process as Billy stands up. Dewey, who is seriously hurt, is taken away by ambulance as police show up, and Gale delivers an impromptu news report about what happened that night.
Scream 2 (1997)[]
Stab, a movie based on the events of the Woodsboro massacre, has a sneak peek that two seniors from Windsor College, Maureen Evans and Phil Stevens, attend. Phil is assassinated by the masked killer now known as Ghostface while briefly leaving the theater to use the restroom. Ghostface sits alongside Maureen in Phil's place and stabs her, forcing her to crawl up on stage in a scream for aid, which the crowd thinks for a publicity stunt until she falls dead.
The news media, including local journalist Debbie Salt, converge on Windsor College where Sidney Prescott studies alongside her closest friend Hallie McDaniel, her new lover Derek Feldman, fellow Woodsboro survivor Randy Meeks and Derek's best friend Mickey Altieri. Two additional Woodsboro survivors arrive: police officer Dewey Riley to provide Sidney security, and reporter Gale Weathers to chronicle the case. Cotton Weary, who is hoping to earn notoriety by being cleared of the rape and murder of Sidney's mother, Maureen Prescott, is the subject of an attempt by Gale and her new cameraman, Joel Jones, to manufacture a confrontation between Sidney and Cotton Weary.
Sidney and Hallie go to a sorority house party that night. Student Cici Cooper is killed by Ghostface at a different adjacent sorority house. Ghostface breaks into the house after the partygoers have left and assaults Sidney. Ghostface injures Derek but leaves when the cops come. Later, after finding that Cici's true name is Casey, Gale theorizes that the new Ghostface is targeting pupils with the same names as the Woodsboro murder victims. Randy theorizes that the killer is likely someone Sidney knows and is patterning the crimes on a movie sequel. Soon later, Ghostface phones Gale, Dewey, and Randy when they are gathered in daylight on the college campus green. Despite their attempts to find him, Ghostface finally ambushes Randy, forcing him into Joel's media van, where he is slain. Joel, scared he will be targeted next, skips town. In an effort to identify the assailant near the previous crime locations as campus darkness falls, Dewey and Gale visit a building to check tapes of footage captured by Joel. However, the assailant approaches them and stabs Dewey. Sidney and Hallie are being driven to a safe home by two cops when Ghostface catches up with them and kills them. In the subsequent battle, Ghostface is knocked unconscious, but recovers and murders Hallie.
Sidney discovers Derek in the auditorium bound to a cross from a previous fraternity hazing ceremony when she is drawn to the music playing in the college theater and searching for safety. Ghostface arrives, revealing himself to be Mickey, and shoots Derek, killing him. Mickey plans to murder Sidney and then consent to being caught so he can claim at his trial that the killings were caused by movie violence. Then it is revealed that Debbie Salt, a local reporter Sidney knows as Mrs. Loomis, is his sidekick. Mrs. Loomis betrays Mickey by shooting him, and Gale is shot in self-defense before collapsing. Sidney brings out the absurdity of Mrs. Loomis' motivation, given that she abandoned her own son in the past, which led him to become a serial killer. Mrs. Loomis explains that she is seeking retribution against Sidney for killing her son, Billy. The struggle continues until Cotton steps in. Mrs. Loomis attempts to coax Cotton into murdering Sidney, but to her horror, he decides to shoot Mrs. Loomis in return for an interview with Sidney and Diane Sawyer. Mickey reappears out of nowhere, but Gale and Sidney shoot him dead right away and brutally. Then, to be sure Mrs. Loomis is dead, Sidney shoots her in the head.
When the police come, Dewey is discovered to still be alive and Gale hops into the ambulance with him rather than seizing the chance to report to the returned Joel, revealing that she cares more for Dewey than for the renown she always craved. By telling the media to focus on Cotton, Sidney diverts attention away from herself while giving Cotton the celebrity he has been seeking.
Scream 3 (2000)[]
Ghostface calls Cotton Weary on his vehicle phone, who is now the host of a popular talk program. The voice begs to be told Sidney Prescott's whereabouts. Ghostface enters Cotton's house and assaults his girlfriend Christine when he doesn't cooperate. Christine assumes Cotton was responsible for the incident after Cotton hurries home. Ghostface murders Christine as he attempts to reason with her and then Cotton after telling Cotton he should have divulged Sidney's whereabouts.
When Gale Weathers receives a call from Detective Mark Kincaid about the new killings, she decides to visit Hollywood where she discovers Dewey Riley working as an advisor on the set of Stab 3, the third installment of the series based on the Ghostface killings. Ghostface kills Sarah Darling, the star of Stab 3, which stops Stab 3's development. Dewey and Gale join the rest of the Stab 3 cast at Jennifer Jolie's house. Ghostface kills her bodyguard and also kills Tom Prinze, another actor, in an explosion brought on by a gas leak.
Sidney, who works as a crisis counselor for a hotline for abused women, lives alone out of dread that another murderer may attack. After locating Sidney, the assailant starts calling her and teasing her, pretending to be her late mother Maureen Prescott to bring her out of hiding and to Hollywood. The sister of Sidney's friend Randy, who was murdered while Sidney was a college student, comes to see Sidney and the others to deliver a videotape Randy made before his death, warning them that anyone in the third and final installment of a horror trilogy—including the movie's "main character" Sidney—could perish. As Ghostface attacks Sidney on a movie shoot, the police are forced to keep Sidney safe in their station.
Roman Bridger, the director of Stab 3, hosts a birthday celebration, and Dewey, Gale, Jennifer and the remaining cast members, Angelina and Tyson, are there. Ghostface assaults the group after Gale finds Roman's body in the basement, supposedly killing Angelina when she goes off by herself, and killing Tyson and Jennifer. The murderer then gives Sidney the all-ahead to go to the estate and free Gale and Dewey from captivity. As Sidney arrives, Ghostface entices her inside, where he has tied and gagged Gale and Dewey. Ghostface shows up while Sidney is liberating the prisoners, but Sidney defeats him by using a concealed revolver. When Kincaid arrives, Ghostface knocks him out cold. Ghostface, who later identifies himself as Roman after surviving being shot thanks to wearing a bulletproof vest, finds Sidney hiding in a hidden screening room after she runs away and hides there.
Roman acknowledges that he is Sidney's half-brother, having been conceived by their mother Maureen while she was a Hollywood actress. He had attempted to reunite with her four years earlier, but she had rejected him since he was the result of rape. The tape of Billy Loomis' father with Maureen was shown to Billy Loomis by Roman, who had become enraged by the rejection. Billy and Stu Macher were then inspired to kill Maureen, which precipitated a wave of killings in Sidney's hometown and at her college. Roman lost it and pulled Sidney out of hiding with the intention of killing her and framing her for the murders after learning how much popularity she had gained as a result of those incidents. Sidney fiercely criticizes Roman after he kills Stab producer John Milton, whom Roman implies is his biological father and one of their mother's rapists. This causes Roman to become enraged and start a fight with Sidney. Roman then shoots Sidney in the chest, but Sidney survives and stabs Roman several times, revealing to him that she, too, was wearing a bulletproof vest. Roman suddenly reappears with a knife as Dewey and Gale approach; Sidney orders Dewey to shoot Roman in the head, which Dewey does, killing him.
Dewey makes a marriage proposal to Gale later on at Sidney's home, and she accepts. After going for a stroll, Sidney comes back and leaves her gates open, which were before proven to be alarming. As soon as she steps inside, Dewey, Gale, and Kincaid urge her to watch a movie with them. Her front door bursts wide as she moves to join the others, but she just walks away and leaves it in its current state.
Scream 4 (2011)[]
High school girls Jenny Randall and Marnie Cooper are killed by Ghostface in 2011, during the 15th anniversary week of the original Woodsboro murders. The next day, Sidney Prescott and Rebecca Walters, her publicist, return to Woodsboro to promote Sidney Prescott's book. Sidney is forced to remain in town while the murders are investigated after evidence is discovered in her rented car.
Ghostface makes a threatening phone call to Sidney's cousin Jill Roberts, who is dealing with the infidelity of her ex-boyfriend Trevor Sheldon, as well as to her friend Olivia Morris. Dewey Riley, who is now the town's sheriff, interrogates Jill and Olivia about their calls, along with their friend Kirby Reed, with the help of his deputies Judy Hicks, Anthony Perkins, and Hoss. Gale Weathers, Dewey's wife, decides to look into the killings over her husband's objections since she is having writing trouble. Sidney spends the night with Jill, her mother, and her aunt Kate. One evening, as Jill and Kirby watch in horror from the opposite side of the street, Olivia is slain by Ghostface. Then Ghostface confronts Sidney herself, and they engage in combat until Perkins and Hoss show there and force Ghostface to depart.
After finding that Rebecca wanted to use the killings to boost book sales, Sidney dismisses her at the hospital. Ghostface then kills Rebecca in a parking garage. Gale enlists the aid of Charlie Walker and Robbie Mercer, two high school movie enthusiasts. Gale and Sidney predict that the murderer will most likely attack during the "Stabathon," a screening party held in a barn where teens congregate to binge watch all of the Stab franchise films. Charlie hypothesizes that the killer is according to the norms of horror remakes. Gale breaks into the gathering to look into it, but Ghostface stabs her in the shoulder. Also killed are Hoss and Perkins, the home guards for Jill. Before attacking her and Kate and murdering Kate, Ghostface informs Sidney via another taunting call that Jill has departed for Kirby's.
At an after-party at Kirby's house, Jill, Kirby, Charlie, Robbie, and Trevor are there when Robbie is killed by Ghostface, who struck when he was intoxicated. When Sidney comes to depart with Jill, Ghostface pursues them both. Kirby releases Charlie, who was chained and gagged, but he then stabs her, identifying himself as Ghostface, before leaving her to bleed to death. Sidney is then faced by Charlie and a second Ghostface, who identifies herself as Jill, while she searches for Jill and phones Dewey. She acknowledges planning the killings because she was envious of Sidney's renown for surviving earlier killing sprees and wanted to become famous as a fictitious victim of the killings, intending to frame Trevor as Ghostface. To ensure that she is the only survivor, Jill murders Trevor and betrays Charlie by stabbing him to death. To further frame Trevor, she later stabs Sidney and dismembers herself.
When Sidney and Jill are being brought to the hospital, Dewey and the police show there. Jill rushes to her hospital room and attempts to kill Sidney one last time after learning that she has survived. Dewey, Gale, and Judy step in after being made aware of Jill's apparent knowledge of the precise location of Gale's stabbing. Sidney uses a defibrillator to render Jill unconscious before shooting her in the heart to murder her. Jill had already subdued Dewey and Hicks and was holding Gale at gunpoint. Dewey summons the whole police force while Jill is falsely identified as the "only surviving hero" by media outside.
Scream (2022)[]
Tara Carpenter, a high school student, is assaulted by Ghostface when she is at home alone 25 years after Billy Loomis and Stu Macher's murderous rampage in Woodsboro. Tara Carpenter was hospitalized as a result.
Wes Hicks, one of Tara's pals, tells Sam Carpenter, Tara's estranged elder sister, about the assault in Modesto. Sam visits Tara at the hospital with her boyfriend Richie Kirsch, and there they catch up with Tara's friends Wes, Amber Freeman, Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Liv McKenzie. That evening, Ghostface kills Vince Schneider, Stu's nephew and Liv's ex-boyfriend. Sam informs Tara that she has been having hallucinations of Billy, who she discovered as a teenager to be her biological father, after having a run-in with Ghostface at the hospital. Sam's real parentage caused their parents to split up, which is why Sam and Tara lost contact.
Dewey Riley, who is separated from Gale Weathers, welcomes Sam and Richie. When Gale and Sidney Prescott seek him for assistance in finding the murderer, he calls them to let them know that Ghostface has made a comeback. Dewey joins them to Mindy and Chad's house where he is reunited with Martha, the mother of the twins and sister of Randy Meeks. Mindy surmises that the killer is employing the conventions of a "requel," which is a continuation of a story that heavily draws from the plot of the original while using Tara and her friends as the new generation and using Sam's connection to Billy as a way to weave the legacy characters. The three attacks have all been on individuals who are somehow connected to the original killers. Afterwards, at their residence, Wes and his mother, Sheriff Judy Hicks, are killed by Ghostface. Gale, who has come to town to cover the story, and Dewey get together. Ghostface attacks Tara and Richie in the hospital, but Dewey and Sam, who are just arriving, save them. Sam, Tara, and Richie manage to escape, but Dewey loses his life while attempting to murder Ghostface.
After hearing of Dewey's passing, Sidney arrives in town and meets Gale and Sam at the hospital. Sam refuses Sidney's request to assist in finding the murderer and instead decides to travel with Tara and Richie out of town. As the group arrives at Amber's, Sidney and Gale discover that it was really Stu's old house where the initial Woodsboro slaughter occurred. Chad and Mindy are both attacked by Ghostface at a celebration honoring Wes' legacy. Amber takes out a revolver and shoots Liv in the head as the friends gather, exposing herself as the murderer. Richie is identified as Tara's assailant and Amber's accomplice when Sidney and Gale arrive. Sam is stabbed by Richie, who then drags Sam, Sidney, and Gale into the kitchen where Sidney initially battled Billy and Stu.
Richie and Amber admit they met online and are Slash movie enthusiasts. Dissatisfied with the direction that the most recent Stab 8 had taken, they made the decision to start a new killing spree, bringing back the "original cast" to serve as fresh "source material" for a future "requel" Stab movie and planning to blame Sam for the crime. Richie goes after Tara as Sidney and Gale battle Amber together. The struggle ends with Gale getting free and shooting Amber, who then falls into a stove that has been turned on and is lit on fire. Sam fights Richie and Tara attacks Amber but is unable to do so. Sam sees Billy in yet another hallucination while Richie chases after her, drawing her attention to Amber's misplaced dagger. Sam, proud of her paternal ancestry, repeatedly stabs Richie with the knife before shooting and murdering him. Amber, who had been horrifically burned, makes another effort to assault the group but Tara shoots her dead.
Sam thanks Sidney and Gale for their assistance as Tara and the Meeks twins are placed into ambulances and driven to the hospital. Gale chooses to write a homage to Dewey rather of reporting on the recent deaths and exposing the perpetrators. Sam joins Tara in the ambulance while a news story is written on the evening's events.
