Maja (pronounced Maya) is the young Hårgan woman with long loose red hair.
Biography[]
Within the movie, we are first introduced to her story from the tapestry hanging outside. During the “skin the fool” chain dance, Maja gives Christian a kick and a knowing smile, and the attraction has started. The next morning, the Hårgas are doing a group dance with emotional gestures and Maja who is singing for them. At the pre-ättestupa meal, Maja is carving something, and at night she places it under Christian’s bed.
The next morning, Josh asks Pelle what the item was, and he explains that it’s a love rune which casts a love spell. Pelle tells Christan and Josh that Maja recently received her “byxmyndig” which he describes as a “pants license” — permission to have sex. (He’s probably using the word “pants” here to mean “underwear” as in British English.) This puts her age at about 15 or 16 years old. Later, when Dani is helping the Hårgas in the kitchen, we see Maja has made a special individual meat tart, which is served to Christian, along with a pink-tinted drink that’s different from everyone else’s.
The next day, Siv reveals to Christian that he is expected to mate with Maja. During the dance competition, Maja sees Christian in the audience and throws herself to the ground, opting out of the dance. During the May Queen dinner, Maja exits the table early while giving Christin come-hither eyes. She then proceeds to have sex with Christian. A very drugged Christian performs the mating ritual with Maja, and after he finishes, she exclaims that she can feel the baby inside of her. In the final scene, Maja appears in red lipstick and clothing, serenely triumphant. Maja is performed by Isabelle Grill.
