Biography[]

The Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.)

The Wolf Man in The Wolf Man.

For the funeral of his lately passed-away brother and to make amends with his estranged father, Sir John Talbot, Larry travels back to his family home in Llanwelly, Wales. Gwen Conliffe, a local woman who owns an antique shop, captures Larry's heart. He buys a walking stick with a silver wolf's head on it as a pretext to chat to her. It is a representation of a werewolf, a guy who transforms into a wolf "during specific periods of the year," according to Gwen. The palm of the next victim is always marked by a pentagram in the werewolf's eyes. When werewolves are mentioned, several villagers recite a poem:

Even though Gwen consistently declines Larry's advances toward a date, the two nonetheless get together that evening at the scheduled time, along with Gwen's friend Jenny, to go get their fortunes read. When looking at Jenny's palm, the Romani fortuneteller Bela notices a pentagram and quickly dismisses her. Larry and Gwen go for a stroll as they wait for their turn. Larry is told by Gwen that she is engaged. They can hear Jenny yelling. Larry makes an effort to save Jenny from a wolf attack. He uses his new walking stick to slay the wolf but gets bit on the chest. When police arrive on the scene, they discover Bela pummeled to death and Jenny's throat torn out, with Larry's walking stick being plainly the murder weapon in the latter case. When Larry is unable to provide evidence to support his claim that he fought a wolf and his chest wound mysteriously heals over night, suspicion about him grows. The absence of Larry and Gwen from Jenny's side at the time of the attack adds to the possibility of adultery. Even though Gwen's fiancé Frank is convinced of their innocence, Larry and Gwen are shunned by the community.

Maleva, Bela's mother, tells Larry that Bela bit him while he was a wolf, and that as a result of being bitten, Larry has also turned into a werewolf. A werewolf can only be killed with silver. He receives a charm from Maleva to stop the metamorphosis. He decides not to believe her and instead offers Gwen the charm as protection.

The following night, as Maleva forewarned, Larry turns into a werewolf and murders a villager. The following morning, he is back to normal and has no memory of his rage. Authorities set traps and dispatch hunting groups in the belief that a wolf is to blame for the murder. Larry transforms into a werewolf the following night and gets caught in one of the traps. Before a hunting party discovers him, Maleva casts a spell to briefly transform him back into human shape, allowing him to escape.

Larry, who is now sure he is a werewolf, makes the terrible decision to leave town. He notices a pentagram on Gwen's hand as he bids her farewell. He claims he murdered Bela and the villager while acting like a werewolf, but his father believes him to be crazy and ties him to a chair to stop him from escaping and show him that he is not a werewolf. When the moon comes up, Larry changes once more, escapes his bonds, and assaults Gwen.
