Douglas is the tritagonist in Bird Box. He is played by John Malkovich.
Biography[]
Douglas was the husband of a woman named Lydia. When the suicide pandemic spread to America, they both headed to a house belonging to a man named Greg, where several other survivors had also gathered, including another married couple, Jason and Samantha, a younger couple, Felix and Lucy, an older woman named Cheryl, a supermarket employee named Charlie, and a war veteran named Tom.
Amidst the chaos, Lydia spots a pregnant woman, Malorie, lying on the ground. Despite Douglas telling her not to, Lydia goes over to help Malorie, but once she reaches her, she accidentally glimpses at one of the demons, and kills herself by entering a flaming vehicle, which explodes and incinerates her as Douglass watches in horror. Luckily, Tom and Lucy manage to get Malorie safely inside, where she is introduced to the other survivors. The survivors theorize that demonic entities have invaded Earth, driving people insane and causing them to kill themselves, and they proceed to cover the windows and make a pact to always blindfold themselves when they go outside. Later on, however, both Jason and Samantha are killed by the creatures, after they run outside whilst trying to save their children whom they had left at home upon the pandemic's outbreak.
A few days later, another survivor is heard knocking on the front door, begging to be let in. Douglas refuses to open it at first, but Malorie grabs a rifle and points it at Douglas and tells Tom to open the door. He does so, and the survivor, a woman named Olympia, heads inside, where the other survivors find out that she is pregnant. This further irritates Douglas, since the group is running low on food supplies. Meanwhile, Greg offers to monitor the house's surveillance cameras to watch the entities indirectly, believing that merely watching video footage of them will be harmless enough, but he is proven wrong and later kills himself while watching the footage.
Eventually, the survivors run out of food, and Charlie suggests that they drive to the grocery store he works at so that they can restock on supplies. After blacking out the car's windows, Charlie, Malorie, Douglas, Tom and Lucy make their way to the grocery store, using the car's GPS as a guide. After they arrive, they don their blindfolds and make their way inside the store. The survivors take food and other supplies with them, while Malorie sees some birds in a cage which she decides to take with her as pets. Suddenly, the survivors are distracted by a pounding noise coming from the door to the loading dock, paired alongside a voice whom Charlie recognizes as belonging to a co-worker of his, nicknamed Fish Fingers. Fish Fingers begins yelling about how the entity is "beautiful" and "must be seen", and starts to break out while Lucy, Tom, and Douglas try to hold him back. Charlie (presumably having seen the creature) opts to sacrifice himself to save the others by tackling Fish Fingers, knocking them both behind the door. Fish Fingers is then heard telling Charlie to look, before he stabs Charlie to death. Fish Fingers' continues to beg the survivors to let him out, but they quickly leave him behind and return to the house. That night, Felix and Lucy decide that they have had enough, and thus they steal the car and drive away, leaving the remaining survivors stranded.
Some time later, Olympia lets another stranger into the house, against Douglas's wishes. The stranger, named Gary, says that he barely escaped with his life after a group of psychos from a mental institute made him and his friends look at the creatures by forcing their eyes open. Douglass is unwilling to let the man stay, however, and threatens Gary with a shotgun. Cheryl knocks out Douglass with a vase, and the group locks Douglass in the garage. Eventually, both Malorie and Olympia go into labor, and everyone begins tending to the two soon-to-be mothers, except for Gary, who takes out various drawings of the entities. Gary is revealed to be one of the Psychotic Seers, and, after knocking out Tom with a can, he quickly begins opening the blinds and removing the protective window covering downstairs, including opening the door to the garage in which Douglas is locked in. Gary then heads upstairs into the maternity ward, where he opens the blinds. Olympia fails to look away in time and jumps out the window, killing herself. Malorie hides with both of the newborn babies under a cover, while Gary then forces Cheryl to look at the entities, causing her to stab herself in the neck with a pair of scissors.
Death[]
Douglas manages to escape the garage, and makes his way upstairs, where he blindly attempts to kill Gary with a shotgun. Douglas manages to shoot him in the shoulder, but while he is reloading, Gary knocks him through a banister, and stabs Douglas in the chest with Cheryl's scissors.
