Bruce The Shark

Bruce is the main antagonist in Jaws.

Biography[]

In Jaws, Bruce first appears (unseen) and attacks swimmers Chrissie Watkins and Alex Kintner.

Bruce was around 25 feet long and weighed around three tons. Oddly, Bruce had noticeable jowls, a feature it also shared with other great whites that appeared in the film franchise. Bruce could easily bite through a leader on a fishing line made of steel piano wire, and smashed the hull of the ORCA with it's great strength.

Bruce's behavior was unique. While normal great whites hunt seals and fish such as tuna, Bruce preferred the taste of human flesh. There were no patterns Bruce's attacks, and it did not hesitate to attack swimmers by night or day.

Though Matt Hooper believed that Bruce was also clever enough to lure its pursuers (Brody, Hooper and Quint) into more open waters where it had the advantage of speed and strength. It also knew it could incapacitate the ORCA by disabling the hull.

Death[]

Bruce was destroyed in his last attempt to devour the crew of the Orca. Chief Brody smacked him with the back of a oxygen tank, which he then threw in the shark's mouth. Bruce was blown up later after the Chief fired multiple bullets while laying on top of the sinking boat's mast. Bruce charged at him, but the tank was hit with the last bullet and exploded, pulverizing the shark and sending its parts skyhigh in a shower of blood. The shark's remains then sink to the seabed.

Victims[]

Chrissie Watkins - Attacked from below, viciously thrown around and eaten only partially by Bruce, with her corpse washing up on shore the next day. The bite radius of the victim, as measured by oceanographer Matt Hooper, proved that a smaller Tiger Shark which was caught, was not the culprit.
Pipit the dog - Not seen, but then it was missed by its owner, assumed to have been eaten by Bruce.
Alex Kintner - Attacked from below on his surfboard, he was bitten, surfaced shortly in a fountain of blood and was dragged under by Bruce.
Ben Gardner - Found dead in his wrecked boat with a large White Shark tooth nearby.
Estuary Victim - Ambushed by the shark when he was busy helping 3 kids in a boat, he was attacked while screaming loudly, likely died as he was eaten by Bruce with his leg severed off. There is a chance however that he was brought to a hospital.
Bartholomew Marion Quint - Devoured by Bruce. He crashed himself on top of the Orca boat, capsized it and pushed the stern down, which caused Quint to lose grip when his hand was hurt by an oxygen tank which caused him to slide down the deck after he couldn't hold on to Chief Brody's hand with his glove. The shark was waiting with a gaping mouth. Quint resisted and tried to kick the shark in his panic but his legs ended up in its mouth. He was chomped down, his legs, pelvis and ribs broken in a most painful manner, had a high-pitch scream and coughed up blood. He still found some strength to bravely jab the shark with a machete while his bones were crushed, but he succumbed to the trauma and was pulled under with his body motionless out of the sight of the already shocked Chief Brody. The shark later shows his teeth to Brody which still must have pieces of Quint's meat hanging on it.
