Anthony Hope is a supporting character from Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He is a young, optimistic sailor and acquaintance of Sweeney Todd who falls in love with Todd's missing daughter, Johanna Barker who is imprisoned by the corrupt Judge Turpin. He is portrayed by Jamie Campbell Bower.
Biography[]
Anthony arrives in London alongside Sweeney Todd (formerly Benjamin Barker) after a long voyage at sea. The two meet on the ship, and Todd tells Anthony about the city's corruption before parting ways. Despite the grim warnings, Anthony remains idealistic and excited about the city.
Shortly after arriving, he wanders through the streets and comes across Johanna Barker, a beautiful young woman singing by her window. She is the ward (and prisoner) of Judge Turpin, who secretly desires her for himself. Anthony is instantly captivated by her beauty and innocence, falling in love at first sight. However, when he tries to speak to her, the cruel Beadle Bamford catches him and violently warns him to stay away, throwing him out onto the streets.
Despite the warning, Anthony becomes determined to free Johanna from Turpin’s grasp. He seeks out Sweeney Todd, who gives him a place to stay and, unknowingly, encourages him in his mission. Later, Anthony unknowingly interrupts Sweeney Todd from slitting Judge Turpin's throat, who reveals his plan to elope with Johanna before noticing Turpin.
After learning that Turpin has sent Johanna to an asylum, Anthony infiltrates the institution by posing as a wigmaker looking for hair to purchase. With the help of Todd's assistant, Tobias, he manages to free Johanna, and make their way back to the barbershop to arrange their escape. Unbeknownst to him, Todd returns with his murder plot in full swing. Fortunately, Johanna, disguised in men’s clothing, avoids being killed. Although it is not shown, it is implied that they successfully escaped London together.
